Dante Audio For Integrators

Dante is an acronym from Australian company Audinate, which stands for "Digital Audio Networking over Ethernet". Their protocol is used to transport multiple audio channels over standard Ethernet IP infrastructure, using Cat 5e or higher cables as well as fiber optic cables. Digital audio data is bit accurate and uncompressed, and can be safely transmitted up to 300 feet over the cable without distortion, maintaining sample-accurate system synchronization, and very low latency (as low as 1 millisecond). Depending on the application scenario, Dante is capable of transporting 512 bidirectional audio channels over Gigabit Ethernet (compared to analog networks), and uses Cat 5e or 6A cables, and there is no need to worry about the gender of the connecting wires, they are always male, and the signal transmission direction is determined by software.

Integrators have found innovative ways to apply Dante to systems. One is to connect Dante-enabled distribution amplifiers with AV-o-IP 1G and 10G systems, such as the AVPro Edge MXnet and its 1G and 10G Dante-equipped encoders, to ingest audio from any source, including multi-channel 3D immersive formats. Using Dante Controller, Audinate’s software management program, these signals can be routed on the Dante network and sent to any Dante decoding device. (Note that Dante is not compatible with Wi-Fi, which is not fast enough for reliable digital audio transmission). The Dante Controller software allows users to configure signal routing and other settings stored in individual Dante devices, and for projects where these routes are permanently established, these settings can be maintained without a connected computer.

MX-1616D Dante Audio Processor

When signals are routed to a multi-zone distribution amplifier, such as the Dante-enabled MX-1616D, the system selects the source audio signal from the audio stream, decodes it, and then transmits it to any of the 16 channels or zone configurations via matrix amplification.

Built in Dante Module

Category cable transmits Dante signals digitally between devices, which offers a huge advantage over using many traditional analog interconnects. As a best practice, analog interconnects should be high quality to resist stray RFI and EMI in harsh rack environments. All Dante audio is 100% lossless 24-bit or 32-bit, supporting sample rates from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz. All Dante devices include a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator clock, all channels are transmitted in precise synchronization with near-zero latency, and any network connection can become a Dante source or destination by adding a Dante device.
